're tired of things like i have one goal, to defeat obama. that is gone. obama was reelected overwhelmingly. the american people want us to work together. republicans want us to work together. democrats want us to work together. they want to balance the -- a balanced approach to everything. especially with the huge deficit and taxes are part of that. i can remember my first president after i had been selected as the democratic leader. i was so afraid, i really was. and as i do on occasion, off the cuff, i said i know how to fight. i know how to dance. i do not dance as well as i fight but i would much rather dense hair -- any time and i still feel that way. it is better to dance than to fight. it is better to work together ho. everything does not have to be a fight. that is how it has been the last couple of years. everyone should comprehend especially my senate friends that legislation is the art of compromise with consensus building. that is political scientists have studied this for generations, they continue to say the way we get things done is to work together. we need republicans to h

learning which senior members of the obama administration really only wanted to serve one term. is hillary clinton going to leave as secretary of state? is eric holder going to leave as attorney general? mr. geithner going to leave as secretary of treasury? the speculation is officially hot and heavy in washington as to who will stay on, who will leave and, of course, who will get the jobs of the people who do leave. everybody in washington is also now figuring out how they are going to work with president obama for another four years. how the politics of him earning a second term affects what he wants to do and how likely it is he is going to be able to do it. it probably was not an auspicious sign for that process when the president, right after his victory speech on tuesday night, right after he was done speak, as soon as he was done speaking, the night he wins a second term, after he gave that speech, he got on the phone and he tried to call the republican leader in the house and the republican leader in the senate, he tried to call john boehner and mitch mcconnell but he was told they

. it looks like president obama is going to get that one too. it'll be 323 electoral votes when all is said and done. but let's go and show you how the president did it, if you will. i want to go to ohio because ohio was a big deal at the time. what was interesting here is where the margins were. it was all margins. this wasn't -- this was reduplicating the map. here's what the county map looks like right now. i'll go to 2008. if anything, he did better in coal country as you can see. and you see the blue goes away over here. romney did what he had to do. he ran up margins here. the problem is right here. it was margins in cuyahoga plus underperforming with white working class men in the auto belt here. these two areas also swing. and those swing areas didn't go for mitt romney as well either. he kept it closer. he ran up the margins in his home turf, but he couldn't cut in the swing areas. one of the interesting things about the swing counties, i want to run through this here. hamilton county stayed with the president. jefferson county stayed with the president. washo county, stayed with t

won ohio, turns out the electoral vote count would have gone to president obama. we lost by two points in ohio. recall back in 2004 when john kerry lost to george bush he would often say both publicly and to me on the floor of the senate, but for half the people that could fit in the ohio state stadium called the horseshoe i would be president today. it was a very narrow victory. i do think there were some reasons that are almost technical that some of you understand well. there are some folks here from silicon valley who are very good at social media and their turnout efforts, the democrats, were quite effective. if you look at the numbers, after the fact, the turnout for democrats among their base was better than we expected. i would say better than they expected based on their polling and their sampling. so, you know, they did a better job than we did getting their voters to the polls. mitt romney got fewer votes than john mccain in ohio and still came within two points. the technology included so-called orca system. some of you maybe read about that in the last couple days which wa

president obama at the white house. the presidential campaign is over as you know but the theatrics apparently are not. the president is holding an event to put political pressure on republicans as both sides negotiate a deal to try to avoid the coming fiscal cliff. our chief white house correspondent ed henry is live at the white house. so what are we expecting from the president today, ed? >> reporter: jon he is going to meet with business leaders as you say later this hour. he will come out and talk about where he believes these fiscal cliff talks are. you remember on friday he will be in pennsylvania for essentially a campaign-style event to try and pressure republicans to move forward in these talks. the white house also has this new twitter campaign they unveiled today, the hashtag, my 2 k, as in $2000 believes middle class families will get if the president's push to extend bush-era tax cuts for the middle class to continue. republicans have been saying that is all about campaigning. jay carney, the white house spokesman says it is about engaging the public. take a listen. >>

two gentlemen, rahm emanuel in the house and barack obama in the senate decided to vote for an amendment to the immigration bills that actually help the union. they were backed by the unions, and they decided that they would poison the well by voting for those amendments that killed immigration reform. nobody talks about that in the immediate, but it was liberal labor unions and those barack obama in the senate who decided to poison the well. he did it again this time, and i think as republicans we have to be smarter than we have been on this issue in the past. we have to look past the easy of the other side and find a rational solution to immigrati immigration. >> i find common ground with that analysis, raul, and i think also that marco rubio has done a very good job of articulating some of the things that emerged from this white house, and not, not, i don't know that you can, you can make a very strong case that republicans have been hostile on this dialog so much as it has been the president's leadership that's divided people in a whole number of different categories
